Portmarnock's Giant Hogweed Project
Giant hogweed is an introduced alien species which has escaped from gardens and readily spreads along water courses. As can be seen in the photos the seedheads produce numerous seeds which remain viable for about 7 years. Having got funding from the Heritage Council we, with Hans Visser in Fingal County Council, approached landowners on whose land giant hogweed was growing. They agreed to contribute towards the treatment of the plants, which had to be done professionally. As can be seen the treatment was successful.
Before Treatment
The first 3 photos illustrate the heavy growth of giant hogweed in the area around the Sluice Marsh.
After Treatment
The second set of 4 pictures show the same area after treatment, however the final one shows the tiny seedlings which will produce next years plants.
